Strikes (Taerigi)

In patterns, strikes test tool accuracy and controlled arc. The goal is not “big power” — it’s repeatable shape and finish.

What strikes train in patterns

  • Tool clarity: knife-hand vs ridge-hand vs backfist vs hammerfist vs elbow.
  • Motion control: circular vs vertical paths without wobble.
  • Finish discipline: stop cleanly; don’t swing past the line.

Common mistakes

  • Turning everything into a punch: tool changes but the student keeps the same mechanic.
  • Loose elbow line: the arm flares and the tool arrives late.
  • Follow-through drift: the strike swings past the defined finish and kills balance.
Pattern cue: Circular does not mean uncontrolled. The arc is defined — the finish is fixed.
