Blocks (Makgi)
In patterns, blocks are a structure + timing check. The finish should be stable, clear, and repeatable.
What blocks train in patterns
- Line control: the path is defined (outer/inner/vertical/guarding).
- Selective tension: relax during movement, stabilize briefly at the finish.
- Posture stability: you should be able to stop and hold the finish without wobble.
Rule first: match the named tool + motion + height before you correct power or speed.

Common mistakes (pattern-specific)
- Tool drift: forearm becomes “kind of knife-hand” (or vice versa).
- Height creep: a middle block rises toward high over time.
- Overreach: finishing too far across the centerline, breaking posture.
- Shoulder lift: tension climbs into the neck, making timing slow and stiff.
Practice notes
Clean finish test
Run the block slowly and stop at the end. If you wobble or can’t hold posture, fix stance and alignment first.
Timing test
Step + block should arrive together. If the feet land and the arms “catch up,” timing is broken.
